what does everyone think about all these new films that end with some ker-azy twist. i personnaly think that when it was done before (think of Angel Heart or Usual Suspects) it was great because no one expected a thing, but since Sixth Sense, the idea to put a twist at the end of a film seems almost like an afterthought, and something that is more for advertisement & hype than furthering the story (think of The Others or Devil's Backbone - both still decent movies). now it seems like movies are more about guessing what mad twist will come at the end, rather than enjoying the story along the way.
what does everyone else think?

"wha!!! they're all ghosts!!! isn't that mad! where did they get THAT idea from?" -from the audience to The Others, before remembering a little film called The Sixth Sense

Hey there.
As far as The Others or Devil's Backbone backbone were concerned I had no idea there was going to be a twist. And I dont think the endings were just tacked of in a hope of giving the movie a gimmick.
I dont know if you have just given bad example but I dont see where you coming from. What are all these movies with twist ending.
A twist at the end of a story is not a new thing its been done in books and films long before Christopher McQuarrie thought of it.
I dont think there are more films with a twist ending now than there were ten years ago.
Also just because the Sixth Sense came out before The Others doesnt mean The Others copied it. I have scripts finished now and whose to say that in ten years time I get the go ahead to make it just as another film comes out with the same kind of ending. I have not copied their idea.
Despin out.

The Others and The Devil's Backbone are two of the best films of last year. Fact-a-mundo.
Del Toro (DB) is my favourite director to emerge in the last couple of years. He imprints his own style on the subject matter and, simply, makes great movies. Blade 2 will rock as an all out no brainer action flick. And if it doesn?t? An ushers getting slapped up on the way out.

I kind of get what you mean. Hearing Jonathon Ross blurt on about The Others? wonderful twist got me thinking; what is the twist? So right from the word go I was thinking; if I had to put a twist on this film, what would I do? I know, I?d make them ghosts...then again, maybe I?m just inquisitive little now-it-all who SHOULD?NT have tried to do this, but is my fault or the marketing departments?
I do think films of today are heavily marketed on their twist-ability, and I think it?s sad. I love it when a twist of Usual Suspects calibre smacks you in the face right out of the blue; this was one of greatest cinematic experiences I?ve ever had. I simply wasn?t excepting it. Superb.
I blame the hype machine more so than the writer...

as audiences become more sophisticated so to has the psychology of cinema.
you are more sophisticated, right?
unless you hadn't noticed ALL movies also have a hook within the first 10 or so minutes.
in fact, cinema has a language, filmmaking (specifically screenwriting) can be disseminated into a science.
open your eyes.
